Description

The Center specializes in cognitive-behavioral therapy, a short-term treatment model with an impressive history of research support.  This model has been shown to result in significant improvements in the quality of life for individuals with a wide range of emotional and behavioral problems as well as difficulties related to medical problems.  All services provided at the Center for Brief Therapy are strictly confidential.  Therapists are trained to adhere to confidentiality guidelines set forth by the American Psychological Association which respect and protect the confidentiality of all of clients.

What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a form of psychological treatment that emphasizes the collaboration between the therapist and the patient, and its effect has been supported by research.  Therapy sessions are structured and focused on achieving specific mutually agreed upon therapy goals.  Cognitive behavioral therapists engage in active problem-solving with their clients and focus primarily on the here-and-now issues identified by the client.  This type of therapy combines cognitive (i.e., thoughts) and behavior (i.e., action) therapy to treat psychosocial problems.  Cognitive therapy aims at identifying thoughts, beliefs and feelings which affect behavior.  Behavioral interventions change unhelpful behaviors through techniques such as systematic desensitization and relaxation training.

CBT is a psychological approach which is based on scientific principles and has been shown to be effective for a wide range of psychosocial problems.  Large numbers of studies have shown this type of treatment to be effective in improving symptoms as well as clients’ quality of life.  Specifically, cognitive behavioral interventions are effective in treating depression and a variety of anxiety problems such as social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder.  In addition to mental health issues, our staff is trained in the treatment of psychological problems related to medical conditions.

We recognize the importance of the mind-body connection as well as the impact medical conditions can have on psychological well-being.   For more information about cognitive behavioral therapy, please visit the National Association of Cognitive Behavioral Therapists.
