The PCOM General Surgery Residency is a unique experience in surgical training. Combining a strong academic and hands-on program with the assets of a large medical school, affords a tremendous learning experience for the surgical resident. Facilities such as a fully equipped animal surgical suite, human patient simulator lab, cadaver lab, and laparoscopic and endoscopic simulators add to the educational experience.
Residents in this program can easily perform about 200 major surgeries each year and will be exposed to neumerous experienced faculty trainersat our affiliated sites. Premium training locations include the world?s finest cancer facility at Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York City, Level 1 trauma center at Cooper Hospital in Camden, New Jersey, state of the art cardio-thoracic surgery at Deborah Heart and Lung Center in Browns Mills, New Jersey, and Penn Trauma at Reading Hospital and Medical Center. This coupled with 6 core general surgery facilities makes for an outstanding experience.
Residents have the benefit of a large and diverse faculty and dedicated academic time in the form of a weekly Grand Rounds Series. Research facilities and guidance are also available on campus.
PCOM's Surgical Residency has also positioned itself to provide access to fellowships in Plastics, Peripheral Vascular, Cardio-Thoracic, and Trauma Surgery. Approximately eighty percent of PCOM Residents complete fellowship training. Arthur J. Sesso, D.O., Program Director, states, ?The scope and diversity of this program is second to none?.

Daily teaching rounds, monthly meetings of the tissue committee, morbidity and mortality committee, and divisional, weekly grand rounds and departmental meetings at each institution. Residents also teach students and interns.
Residents have access to PCOM's 60,000-volume medical library, on-line access to the Medline database and on-line access to every medical library in Pennsylvania, and computer and computer-assisted learning capabilities through Blackboard.
