Farzaneh Daghigh, PhD

Dr. Daghigh is a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry/Molecular Biology. She joined PCOM in 1998. She received her Ph.D. degree from the Department of Biochemistry at Temple University School of Medicine in 1995 and completed a postdoctoral research program at the DuPont-Merck Pharmaceutical.

Dr. Daghigh is an advisor for the Nutrition Club of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. She has an interest in medical nutrition education and serves as a nutrition advocate bringing nutrition related topics to PCOM students and the community at large.  In a recent publication, “Farzaneh Daghigh, Ph.D., David Vettori, DO, and Jeffrey Harris, Ph.D. (2011).  Nutrition in Medical Education: History, Current Status, and Resources. Topics in Clinical Nutrition 26(2) Spring 2011 issue”, she has made recommendations on how to incorporate online materials on medical nutrition into the medical curriculum.  In addition, she had provided a “Nutritional Resource Databank” which is available on the PCOM’s Library website. To access these resources, follow the link below.

Dr. Daghigh is a member of the American Society for Nutrition, the Nitric Oxide Society, the PCOM Chapter of Sigma Xi, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.  Her research focuses on inflammatory diseases such as periodontitis. (Read the article in the Digest about the Department's ongoing research into inflammation). She has studied arginine metabolism and the role of nitric oxide in human gingival fibroblasts. Dr. Daghigh has authored a chapter on Reactive Oxidant Species and Emerging Therapies in Clinical Medicine in a book entitled, "Oxidative Stress: Clinical and Biomedical Implications" Nova Publishers, 2007.
