Primary Care Scholars Program

Full Brochure - Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) trains the largest number of primary care physicians in Pennsylvania and has historically demonstrated a commitment to primary care and medically underserved populations.

In an effort to address the current national shortage and meet the increased need for primary care physicians, PCOM has created the Primary Care Scholars Program (PCSP).

The mission of the PCSP is to sustain the commitment of PCOM medical students to careers in primary care, with a specific focus on the needs of underserved communities, both urban and rural, in Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Student Benefits

The PCSP offers medical students unique learning opportunities utilizing a collaborative interprofessional approach to medicine, as well as training in cultural competency and health literacy. Students will be involved in patient care under the supervision of attending physicians within the framework of a Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) model.

The program will be implemented during the four years of the medical program of study. Medical students will:

• Be assigned to a primary care physician mentor
• Participate in PCSP seminars
• Discuss preventive healthcare topics with families and monitor patient progress in the Family Counts Program, and shadow medical professionals in a PCMH
• Have an opportunity to conduct a research project with medical professionals at a PCMH with an option to present at a national conference
