Qian Chen, PhD

  

Dr. Qian Chen is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology, Microbiology, Immunology and Forensic Medicine after two and half years of postdoctoral training at PCOM. Dr. Chen currently collaborates with Dr. Young and has made substantial contributions in sequestering NIH grant funding, authoring peer-reviewed publications/poster presentations and training graduate/D.O. students. She received her PhD in Cardiology from the Xi'an Jiao Tong University College of Medicine in 2001 in China. Dr. Chen is a member of Neuroscience Society and Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society.

Research
Dr Chen's research interest is to understand the pathological changes in vascular endothelial dysfunction under various disease conditions, such as myocardial infarction, stroke and diabetes. Because vascular endothelial dysfunction is one of earliest events occurring in many diseases, the clarification of the related mechanisms can provide a new strategy for treatment. Protein kinase C is very important for regulating vascular endothelial function. However, the function and changes of different PKC isoforms in different diseases are still unclear. Currently, she is conducting experiments to understand the role of different PKC isoforms in regulating leukocyte-endothelium interactions in vivo by using intravital microscopy. She is also planning to combine intravital microscopy with measurement of free radicals to relate the oxidative stress in leukocyte-endothelial interactions under pathological conditions, such as hyperglycemia.
