Dr. Matthew Schure is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. In addition to Dr. Schure’s administrative officer role, he serves as a Professor in the Department of Psychology, leading individual lectures on strategic planning and counseling issues impacting Jewish Americans. Preceding Dr. Schure’s appointment at PCOM, he oversaw critical organizational functions at the New York Institute of Technology as President and Chief Executive Officer. From 1991-2000, Dr. Schure’s responsibilities included increasing new student enrollment and retention, introducing technology as a major component of the instructional process, as well as implementing a multiple liberal arts-based, interdisciplinary core curriculum, which stressed writing skills, mathematical reasoning skills and technology literacy. While at New York Institute of Technology (1969-1991), Dr. Schure’s additional posts were as Chairperson and Professor of Community Medicine; Deputy Provost/Director of the Human Resources Development Center for the administration of undergraduate and graduate programs in Behavioral Sciences; Associate Dean for Academic Assessment; and Professor of Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Schure is also a Licensed New York State Psychologist.
Dr. Schure completed his undergraduate degree in psychology at Queens College, C.U.N.Y. and received his MA and MPh in educational psychology at Columbia University. Dr. Schure fulfilled his doctoral studies in educational psychology at Columbia as well. His clinical concentration has focused on the educational psychologist’s interest in personality correlates of learning. Dr. Schure has also collected data and conducted research on locus of control and the impact of a self-help/professional collaborative model of human services delivery on individuals and community.
Dr. Schure has been active on a national level, chairing the Council on Pre-doctoral Education of the American Osteopathic Association and the Board of Governors American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine. In New York, he served as Chairman of the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation and Policy Advisory Group on Outcomes Assessment and Institutional Effectiveness for the New York Education Department. Dr. Schure is a member of the Pennsylvania Workforce Investment Board.
As recognition for his commendable service and accomplishments, Dr. Schure has been presented with various awards and honors such as Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa, New York Institute of Technology; Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition; New York State Osteopathic Medical Society, President’s Citation; and Corning Higher Education Leadership Award.
