| Description |
| The prevalence of overweight/obesity for both adults and children has increased dramatically and has now become an international public health problem. Most strikingly, this rising prevalence of obesity has lead to increase in mortality, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, dyslipidemia, coronary artery disease, cancer, stroke and many other medical complications that primary care physicians battle on a daily basis. This program will discuss the public health issues, pathophysiology, assessment of obesity, surgical and behavioral interventions, and new pharmacologic approaches with an emphasis on its clinical consequences. |
| Objectives |
- Summarize key public health issues associated with obesity.
- Identify the multiple influences and physiology of the obese patient.
- Describe new data that helps clarify how obesity accelerates cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and dyslipidemias.
- Explain how to perform an assessment of obesity in the primary care setting.
- Describe appropriate evidence-based behavioral and pharmacologic treatment for the obese patient.
- Understand the multiple behavioral issues relating to obesity.
- Review the indications and contraindications to bariatric surgery.
- Discuss the pre and post operative medical requirements of the bariatric surgery patient.
- Review current research issues and programs in underserved communities.
