General Program Learning Goals:
- Prepare practitioner-scholars who possess a comprehensive understanding of the field of mental health counseling across theoretical, research, and applied practice domains.
- Prepare students to understand counseling history and philosophy.
- Prepare students for individual and group approaches to assessment and evaluation.
- Provide students with an understanding of the cultural context of relationships, issues and trends in a multicultural and diverse society.
- Instruct students in counseling, consultation, and psychotherapy processes.
- Provide an understanding of research methods, statistical analysis, needs assessment, and program evaluation.
- Model and instill the values of advocacy and social justice.
48-credit Program Structure
The program will consist of 48 credit hours:
- 39 credits of didactic coursework
- 9 credits of practicum experience
60-credit Program Structure
The program will consist of 60 credit hours:
- 51 credits of didactic coursework
- 9 credits of practicum experience
Students in both degree options will take a comprehensive examination at the end of the first year or beginning of the second year of study. Students will have the option of either part-time or full-time study:
- Full time study will involve 2 years enrollment for 7 consecutive quarters.
- Part time study typically involves three years enrollment.
Students may transfer up to six credits from other master's level programs at the discretion of the program chair.
