Chair and Associate Professor, Department of Pharmaceutical Science
Dr. Sharma is a native of New Delhi, India and has resided in the US since 1992. Dr. Sharma received his bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from Delhi University and then his master's and PhD degrees in pharmaceutical sciences from the Panjab University in India. He earned his Doctor of Pharmacy from Midwestern University in Downers Grove, Illinois. Dr. Sharma conducted his postdoctoral research in the Departments of Pharmaceutics and Pharmadynamics, and Physiology and Biophysics at the University of Illinois in Chicago.
Prior to joining PCOM School of Pharmacy, Dr. Sharma served as a faculty member of the College of Pharmacy, North Dakota State University as an Assistant Professor and at Texas A&M Health Science Center-Baylor College of Dentistry as an Associate Professor. Dr. Sharma brings with him almost twenty years extensive experience in cardiovascular physiology and pharmacology. In his search for clinical biomarkers for the early stages of congestive heart failure, Sharma’s research is focused on apoptosis and the signaling cascade that occur with sepsis-induced myocardial dysfunction. Dr. Sharma’s research had been funded through the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of NIH and the American Heart Association. Recently, Dr. Sharma received Research Grant from the Oral and Maxillofacial Research Foundation to determine the mechanisms responsible for low-dose ketamine-mediated analgesic response in patient following oral surgery.
Dr. Sharma plans to develop the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences as a platform for the growth and development of his faculty in the PCOM-School of Pharmacy - Georgia Campus. Currently Dr. Sharma is the President of the Association of Scientists of Indian Origin in America, Inc. (ASIOA, Inc.) and plans to bring 4th National meeting to ASIOA to Suwanee, Georgia scheduled in January 2011. Dr. Sharma is an avid fan of cricket and will be glad to share the nuances of the cricket ball with anyone who is interested.
