Originally from Pittsburgh, Pa., Dr. Sampson earned his Bachelor of Science degree at Gannon University in Erie, Pa. He is a 1992 Centennial graduate of Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, MO. He completed his internship and family medicine residency at Garden City Hospital in Michigan where he served as chief resident. As an athlete himself, he pursued a career in Sports Medicine, completing a one-year Sports Medicine Fellowship at Metro Health Hospital in Grand Rapids, MI. Both programs were affiliates of Michigan State University. He was the Alpha Fellow and remained as the co-director of the fellowship and faculty with the Family Medicine Residency program at Metro Health Hospital.
While in Grand Rapids, he served as team physician or assistant team physician for numerous competitive athletic teams.
Prior to relocating to the Atlanta metro area, Dr. Sampson was the Department Chair of Family Medicine and Associate Professor of Sports Medicine and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine at Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg, Va. He was the team physician for the Virginia Tech Hokies athletic teams. He served as president of the Virginia chapter of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians and sat on the board of the Virginia Academy of Family Physicians (ACOPF). He was also named the 2007 Young Physician of the Year by the ACOFP. He has worked with college, Olympic and professional sports teams throughout his career and he continues to speak at local, regional and national conventions on sports medicine and family medicine topics.
Dr. Sampson is an associate professor of Family Medicine/Sports Medicine, director of Primary Care Skills and Family Medicine Clerkships at GA-PCOM. He is also the faculty advisor of the Family Medicine and Sports Medicine clubs at Georgia Campus.
Clinically, he practices Primary Care Sports Medicine with Dr. Gary Levengood at Sports Medicine South in Lawrenceville, Ga. He treats both musculoskeletal and medical issues of athletic and physically active individuals, covering the spectrum from the professional athlete to the weekend warrior. Being a DO, he also incorporates OMM (manual medicine) in the care of his patients.
He serves on the board of the American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine and is chair of its Student/Resident Relations Committee. Dr. Sampson is board certified in both Family Medicine and Sports Medicine.
