Assistant Professor of Family Medicine
Tomia Palmer Harmon, MD, is a native of rural Georgia and serves as Director of Primary Care Skills. Dr. Harmon’s focus is making sure that all of the first and second year students at GA-PCOM get a good core foundation in taking a patient history, doing a physical examination, and documenting the patient visit.
Dr. Harmon earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry Pre-med from Xavier University of Louisiana and her Medical Degree from the Medical College of Georgia. She then completed the family medicine residency at The Medical Center in Columbus, GA. She was in private practice in Fort Valley, GA for 5 years. She held several positions during that time, including Chief of Staff of Peach Regional Medical Center, Medical Director of the Extended Stay Program, member of the Medical Executive Committee and member of the Peach County Hospital Authority. She also served as co-Medical Director of Southern Care Hospice.
She left private practice in 2006 to serve as an Associate Director of The Family Medicine Residency at The Medical Center in Columbus, GA. She served as Chair of the Recruitment Committee and as a member of the Curriculum and Family Practice Management committees while there.
She has also worked for the Atlanta Veterans Affairs Medical Center. She served as Team Lead for the Stockbridge Community Based Outpatient Clinic while working for the VA.
Dr. Harmon has held clinical appointments at the Medical College of Georgia, Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Morehouse School of Medicine and Mercer University School of Medicine.
Dr. Harmon is a strong advocate of organ transplant and preventive medicine. She wrote “Roles of Religion and Geography in Organ Donation in the African-American Community” and was published in the Journal of the National Medical Association.
Dr. Harmon is married and has one daughter.
