Murray R. Berkowitz, DO, MA, MS, MPH

Dr. Murray R. Berkowitz received his DO degree from the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery at what is now the Des Moines University Osteopathic Medical Center. He earned his Master of Public Health degree at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Berkowitz is residency trained in General Preventive Medicine and Public Health (State of Maryland Dept. of Health and Mental Hygiene). He is Board Certified in Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, as well as in Preventive Medicine and Public Health, and holds added certification in Occupational Medicine. He earned the Master of Arts and Master of Science degrees from Columbia University and received his engineering degree at what is now the Polytechnic Institute of NYU.  He also did advanced studies and research at the University of Texas at Arlington and George Mason University. Dr. Berkowitz is a graduate of the 2004-2005 AOA Health Policy Fellowship.  He is currently a Research Fellow at the Osteopathic Research Center in Ft Worth, Texas. 

Dr. Berkowitz is a member of the American Osteopathic Association, American Academy of Osteopathy, Georgia Osteopathic Medical Association, Association of Military Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons, American Osteopathic College of Occupational and Preventive Medicine, and American Osteopathic Academy of Medical Informatics. He served as the Secretary-Treasurer of the Maryland Association of Osteopathic Physicians in 2002-2003 and as Vice-President in 2006. Dr. Berkowitz served on the AOA House of Delegates in 2002. He currently serves on the Osteopathic Diagnosis and Treatment Education, Medical Economics, and Publications Committees of the AAO and was the inaugural Chair of the Informational Technologies Committee. He previously served as Vice-President (1992-1993) and President (1993-1994) of the Des Moines Chapter of AMOPS. He is Scientific Editor (Editor-in-Chief) of the American Academy of Osteopathy Journal, and is a peer-reviewer for the Journal of the American Osteopathic Association and the Southern Medical Journal. He serves on the Journal of the American Osteopathic Association Editorial Board.

Dr. Berkowitz currently is a Tenured Associate Professor of Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine at Georgia Campus—Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he is Director of the Family Medicine/OMM Clerkships. He is also the Director of Preventive and Community-Based Medicine and contributes to teaching in the Clinical Neurosciences course in Basic Sciences. He is the Course Director for the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program course “Biostatistics and Epidemiology.”  Most recently, he had a private osteopathic medicine practice in Arlington, Virginia and Annapolis, Maryland. He served as a Staff Physician at Delaware’s Stockley Center for the Developmentally Disabled. Previously, he worked for the Virginia Dept of Health as Director of a three-county health district. Before that, he worked for the State of Maryland Dept of Health and Mental Hygiene Community Health Administration and was a Visiting Assistant Professor of Computer and Information Sciences at Towson University. Prior to that, Dr. Berkowitz served on active military duty as a Medical Corps Officer in the United States Army. Before attending medical school, he served in numerous assignments in the US Army and US Air Force. He was a Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) in the USAF, military aviator and parachutist and also holds the Master Space Badge and the Office of the Secretary of Defense Identification Badge. He has twenty-six military awards and decorations.

Dr. Berkowitz is a published author and speaker with over 100 manuscripts, papers, and presentations.  He has actively consulted in the areas of Bioinformatics and Medical Informatics, as well as the design of Computer Systems Architectures and Database Systems. He consults in the areas of General Preventive Medicine and Public Health, Occupational Medicine, Emergency and Disaster Planning, and has been a speaker at Osteopathic Medical Conferences and Convocations.
