Dr. Nicholas has served as Professor, Chair and Residency Program Director of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine at PCOM since 1987. Dr. Nicholas received his B.A. from the Pennsylvania State University in 1971 and his D.O. from PCOM in 1975. He joined the College faculty as an Instructor in 1976 after completing his internship at PCOM. Dr. Nicholas has operated an OMM practice on-campus since 1977. He was the chairperson for the Curriculum committee here at PCOM from 1997-2003. He was elected to the Board of Governors of the American Academy of Osteopathy (AAO) in 1982 and became a fellow of the American Academy of Osteopathy (FAAO) in 1985. He was Chairman of the committee on fellowship of the AAO from 2002-04. He has been a member of the Educational Council on Osteopathic Principles since 1978. Additionally, he served on the American Osteopathic Association's Steering Committee on the National Institute for Osteopathic Education Development in 1982. Dr. Nicholas currently serves as co-chairman of POMA's Committee on Osteopathic Principles, Practice, and Policy.
Dr. Nicholas was honored with the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1996 and the Chapel of the Four Chaplains Legion of Honor Award in 1981. He also received the Frederic J. Solomon, DO Award of Merit from the Pennsylvania Society of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians in 1999. In 2005 he received an AOA Mentor Hall of Fame Award. He has published articles in several distinguished professional journals, including "A Somatic Component to Myocardial Infarction" in the British Medical Journal (1985) and the Journal of the American Osteopathic Association (1987), and "Palpation in Osteopathic Medicine" in Osteopathic Annals (1978), as well as Atlas of Osteopathic Techniques (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2008), the latest, most complete text on osteopathic manipulative techniques, which was written with his brother, Dr. Evan Nicholas. Dr. Nicholas has lectured extensively on Osteopathic Principles and Practice nationally and in Europe and directs the osteopathic manipulative medicine educational programs in Germany (DAAO-MWE) and Austria (OAGMM) for those European physicians interested in osteopathic medicine.
